How Does Music Therapy Support Children with Autism?

Music therapy aims to achieve non-musical goals through music. For example, common goals in sessions include verbal communication, regulation, and emotional expression.

At Resonate Music Therapy, we want all of our clients to be themselves. We don’t see common autistic behaviors as “negative.” Instead, we understand that stimming and other behaviors are part of your child’s way of regulating and communicating. However, there are still many ways we can help your child develop critical life skills.

And music is excellent for letting your child be themselves while also working on cognitive, social, and motor skills!

Music Therapy in Action

At Resonate, we can work on a number of goals and outcomes with your child. For this example, we will focus on an intervention that promotes communication, social interaction, and emotional expression in a child with autism.

  1. Song Choice: We love working with your child's preferences! For interventions, we choose a song they know and love to increase participation and fun.

  2. Instruments: The therapist introduces a variety of musical instruments, such as drums, xylophones, and shakers. These instruments provide sensory experiences and opportunities for the child to engage in nonverbal communication.

  3. Engagement: The therapist starts playing the song on a preferred instrument, inviting the child to join in. The therapist carefully watches for any response from the child, whether it's through eye contact, movement, or vocalization.

  4. Turn-Taking: As the child becomes more engaged, the therapist models turn-taking by playing a phrase on an instrument and then giving the child a turn to respond with a different instrument.

  5. Vocalization and Expression: The therapist introduces simple vocalizations related to the song, such as humming or "la-la" sounds. This encourages the child to explore vocal expression in a supportive and non-demanding context.

  6. Sensory Exploration: The therapist may use different sensory stimuli, like fidgets or textured objects, to enhance the child's experience and engagement with the music.

This is just one, simple example of music therapy for autism in practice, but as you can see, each intervention is personalized to the child’s goals and even how regulated they are that day. In every situation, the therapists at our Colorado Springs children’s autism clinic do their best to embrace their unique personalities and preferences.
