What is Music Therapy?

The perennial question clients have is: what exactly is music therapy?Music therapists are trained. They complete a degree program approved by the American Music Therapy Association, complete 1,200 clinical hours, and pass the certification board for music therapists. Music therapists use music to achieve non-musical goals. These non-musical goals could be sensory, motor, emotional, physical, cognitive, or behavioral.

Music therapy can benefit a wide range of people, including but not limited to: individuals on the Autism spectrum, with Down Syndrome, sensory processing disorders, grief and bereavement, Traumatic Brain Injury, CVA (stroke), and genetic or physical disorders. An assessment session is used to develop a treatment plan, with specified goals and objectives. The developed music therapy treatment plan can support other therapies the child or individual is receiving.

What Are Your Credentials?

A professional music therapist holds a bachelor's degree or higher in music therapy from one of over 70 American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) approved college and university programs. A music therapist also must complete 1200 hour internship with clinical practice and pass the board certification test for music therapists. After becoming credentialed, a music therapist must continue education throughout their practicing years.

On top of certifications, our Music Therapists are able to provide a wide variety of music lessons for various disciplines including guitar, piano, percussion, and voice.

How can I pay?

There are many ways you or your family can receive services. Resonate is a Medicaid approved provider. If you are on the CES, SLS, CHRP, and CLLI Medicaid waivers, you have access to music therapy services!

Other ways to pay for therapy services include:

  • Victim’s Comp through the 4th District Attorney’s Office

  • HSA or flex accounts

  • Insurances (must cover an out of network, in office professional visit. Some insurances unfortunately specifically do not cover MT).

  • Private Pay and sliding scale options

  • Some agencies for individuals in a community placement.

Adaptive Lessons

In adaptive lessons, the teacher gets creative in providing supports needed for a student to be successful in learning the instrument. Though, not music therapy, adaptive lessons would be provided by a board certified music therapist (MT-BC).

Adaptive lessons could be a great fit for someone who is trying to learn an instrument, but might need extra support in: attention maintenance, self regulation, frustration levels, fine motor skills, reading comprehension skills, etc.
