Telehealth Parent Coaching: Speech Therapy Services for Real Life

Finding the right supports for communication, executive functioning, and/or language can feel overwhelming—especially when your loved one’s or family’s needs aren’t being fully met by standard speech therapy care delivery models.

Maybe you have been told your child is “not ready” for AAC. Maybe they did not qualify for school-based speech services, yet you still see that communication presents challenges for them. Maybe your family needs support, but weekly travel to an appointment is not realistic. Or perhaps your child already receives speech therapy, and you are looking for more guidance on how to carry helpful strategies into everyday life.

At Resonate Music Therapy, our speech team is here to help. Our speech-language pathologist Sarah Killian, M.S., CCC-SLP, is currently building a telehealth caseload for clients and their families in Colorado and Tennessee (Washington coming soon!). Through virtual speech therapy and parent coaching, she supports children and caregivers in ways that are flexible, practical, individualized, and grounded in respect for every child’s unique communication style.

You may be looking for support if…

Our active, parent coaching telehealth may be a good fit if you’ve had thoughts like:

  • “Does my child really need certain skills before they’re ready for AAC?”

  • “My child did not qualify for speech services, but I still want support—what are my options?”

  • “My child needs speech therapy, but getting to weekly appointments is difficult.”

  • “My child is already in speech, but we are not seeing changes at home or carryover between sessions.”

  • “I want to learn how to better support my child’s communication throughout the day.”

  • “I have heard terms such as AAC, gestalt language processing, or neurodiversity-affirming care, but I am not sure what they mean or where to start.”

  • “I feel stuck with how to help my child share what they want or need. I want to know their internal world.”

  • “We’re on a good track, I just want to keep growing alongside my loved one!

You do not have to have all the answers before reaching out. Our role is to listen, learn about your child and family, and help you determine what the most helpful kind of support (s) will be.

For many children and families, virtual parent-coaching-based speech therapy can offer valuable opportunities. Your SLP can see the toys, activities, routines, and communication partners that are already part of your child’s daily life. Together, you can practice strategies during real moments: snack time, play, getting dressed, reading books, transitions, favorite games, or other routines that matter to your family.

Research on parent-mediated intervention has also found that children and caregivers can make comparable communication-related progress through telepractice and in-person delivery models!

Teletherapy is not simply “therapy on a screen.” Sarah provides collaborative coaching, observation, real-time problem-solving, and support designed around your family’s actual life.

Why parent coaching matters

Traditional speech sessions often take place for 30 to 60 minutes each week. Those sessions are absolutely meaningful—but it’s also just one snapshot in time, when parents/caregivers are there all the time.

A parent-coaching model recognizes that caregivers are already experts on their own child. The goal is not to give families one more thing to do or to expect perfection. Instead, Sarah works alongside caregivers to help them notice communication opportunities, understand their child’s current skills, and feel more confident using supportive strategies in natural routines.

For example, instead of practicing a communication strategy only in a therapy session, a parent may learn how to use it during a favorite snack, while building with blocks, in the car, or during bedtime books. Small, sustainable changes in everyday interactions can create many more chances for connection and communication.

Parent education and family involvement are recognized parts of speech-language pathology support, helping families continue intervention beyond the session itself.

We also know that communication growth does not happen only during your virtual session! We also offer an add on service called Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM) to help Sarah stay connected to your child’s therapy plan between visits. Through a qualifying digital platform, families may share information about home practice, participation, and how strategies are working in everyday life. Sarah can use that information to provide more individualized guidance, make thoughtful adjustments, and help your family focus on the strategies that matter most. RTM is optional and does not replace speech therapy; it is an added layer of support that may be included when it fits your child’s active plan of care and your family’s goals. Sarah can assign homework, set alerts so you get reminders, and coordinate care throughout the week. RTM is often fully covered by insurance!

Our neuro-affirming approach

At Resonate, we believe communication support should honor the whole child—not focus on making a child appear more ‘typical’, comply with adult expectations, or mask (present in ways that are not authentic, which we know takes valuable cognitive resources, and research shows results in negative long-term mental health impacts).

A neurodiversity-affirming approach recognizes that children may communicate, play, learn, connect, regulate, and engage in many different ways. Therapy can support meaningful communication while respecting a child’s identity, autonomy, interests, sensory needs, and preferred forms of expression.

That may include spoken language, gestures, signs, AAC, facial expressions, scripting, movement, shared interests, or other forms of authentic communication.

For families who are newer to neurodiversity-affirming care, Sarah can provide education and practical parent coaching- you’re invited to be your authentic self as we navigate what’s working and what’s not. We can learn together and focus on what matters most: helping your child communicate needs, preferences, ideas, boundaries, and connection in ways that are meaningful to them.

Neurodiversity-affirming speech-language support commonly emphasizes individualized, functional goals; respect for preferred communication modalities; collaboration with families; and strengths-based care.

Areas Sarah can support

Sarah brings experience supporting children and families in a range of speech and language areas, including:

  • Augmentative and alternative communication, or AAC

  • Early language development

  • Speech sound disorders

  • Gestalt language processing

  • Literacy and reading-related language skills

  • Neurodiversity-affirming communication support

  • Parent education and coaching

  • Individualized strategies for communication at home and in daily routines

Every child’s needs, strengths, and goals are different. An initial evaluation or consultation is an opportunity to learn more about your child’s communication profile and discuss what type of support may make sense for your family.

Services designed around your family

Family-centered care means therapy should work with your life—not ask your life to fit around therapy.

Through telehealth, services can be shaped around your family’s needs, routines, priorities, and capacity. That may mean:

  • Meeting virtually from home.

  • Focusing on parent coaching rather than a child sitting at a screen for an entire session.

  • Using your child’s preferred toys, activities, and interests.

  • Creating goals that are practical and meaningful to daily life.

  • Helping you understand what you are seeing and how to respond supportively.

  • Building strategies that feel manageable, not overwhelming.

There is no one “right” way for a child to communicate. Our goal is to support communication, connection, participation, and self-advocacy in ways that are authentic for your child and sustainable for your family.

Who can receive services?

Sarah is currently licensed to provide telehealth speech-language services to families in:
